Emperor Penguins
Emperor Penguins stands about 4 feet and weighs between 40 to 100 lbs making it the largest of the penguin species.
Emperors assemble at the breeding colonies early in winter, shortly after the sea ice has formed in the Antarctic.
On their return the Emperor Penguin looks for its mate from the previous year, and unless that male or female has died, it will mate with the same partner.
After the female lays her egg , she passes it over to the male. She then travels across the ice to feed in fish-filled waters in the north, spending the winter at sea.
If an egg is lost, it cannot be relaid. By the time the female returns from feeding, it is far too late to try again. |
