Zebras
Zebras are large (450 to 1000 lbs), long lived (up to 24 years) horse-like animals.
They have manes of short erect hair, tufted tails and black and white striped coats. These stripes act as a form of camouflage that break up the outline of the body, confusing predators by distorting true distance.
There are three species of Zebra left in Africa.
The Burchells Zebra (also known as the common or plains zebra) which is the most numerous and widespread species in the east.
The Grevy’s zebra which is now found mostly in northern Kenya, and the Mountain Zebra which is found in southern and southwestern Africa. |
